Los Altos grew from a rural community of summer orchards into an upscale commuter town between the 1950s and 1980s. In the 1970s, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak created the first generation of Apple computers in a Los Altos garage.
Today Los Altos is a favored place to live for affluent professionals. Along with larger lots than those in many Peninsula communities, Los Altos combines a leafy suburban tranquility with the convenience of its charming downtown Village. Los Altos real estate ranges from 1950s ranchers to newly-built homes in a variety of traditional and contemporary styles. The lowest sale prices dip slightly below $2 milion, while the highest go up to the mid-$7 millions. The median price lies around $3.4 million.
Los Altos has eight neighborhoods to choose from, each with their own distinctive feel:
Los Altos has two main shopping areas. Downtown Los Altos offers more than 150 shops and restaurants spread over six tree-lined blocks. Along with an abundance of locally-run stores catering to a range of needs and niches, there are many outstanding restaurants and laid-back coffee shops. Japanese options are particularly plentiful, with authentic Tokyo-style yakitori at Sumika, sushi at Akane and Sumo Sushi Boat, and chic Hiroshi pairing wine with outstanding dishes. Ambiance is an upscale highlight, creatively fusing New American cuisine with French and Asian influences. Bumble and Los Altos Grill serve great American-style food in a more casual setting. For groceries, shoppers will find the refined gourmet Draeger’s Market.
The Rancho Shopping Center, located in the Rancho neighborhood further south along Foothill Expressway, also offers a wide selection of restaurants and shops including a Safeway supermarket.
A Whole Foods Market is located at Los Altos’ northern edge along El Camino Real. Shoppers also have easy access to the extensive stores and restaurants at the San Antonio Shopping Center.
The Los Altos Golf and Country Club has been a local institution since the 1920s. The historic 18-hole golf course was completely renovated in 2004, with the clubhouse updated to incorporate a state-of-the-art fitness center in 2014. Facilities include a family-friendly aquatic center with a poolside barbeque, tennis courts with a professional coaching staff, a first-class weight room, yoga instruction, and other modern fitness facilities. Exceptional seasonal food paired with an extensive selection of wines is also available.
Local education is outstanding, with numerous well-regarded elementary schools and the excellent Los Altos High.
With great shopping and plenty of family-friendly activities, Los Altos is a charming and youthful oasis.
